Broadbent Vinho Verde

Broadbent Vinho Verde

Tasting Notes:

Vinho Verde, with tart acid, low alcohol, and a hint of fizz is the perfect summertime refresher. Expect tasting notes of tart green apple, citrus and ripe pear. Plus this wine is only 9% alcohol by volume so it’s very easy sipping.

Broadbent Wines:

Founded in 1996, their focus has always been on family-owned wineries, on places with personality and stories, and on wines that come from the heart. Bartholomew Broadbent’s love for Portuguese wines stems from their eminent drinkability, restrained alcohol levels and the balance which makes them versatile enough to pair with all kinds of everyday dining

Grape Varieties:

Broadbent Vinho Verde is a blend of Amaral, Borraçal, Espadeiro, Loureiro, Pedernã, and Vinhão all native Portuguese varieties

Vinho Verde:

Vinho Verde isn’t the name of the grapes used to make this wine, but instead the region they are from. The Vinho Verde region of Portugal is in the north west corner bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, mountain ranges to the east and south and the Minho river to the north.

Let’s talk a little bit about the name, there have been a lot of rumors about its origin but one thing that we know for sure is that Vinho Verde, or green wine, isn’t referring to the color. the other most prominent reason for the name has to do with the land itself, most notably that it’s a very rainy, very lush green landscape. One that is slightly at odds with the typical picture of Portugal being a hot dry country.

These wines are made from native Portuguese grapes and while there are something like 24 different varieties that can be used typically there are just 6 white grapes that are the most common: Alvarinho, Arinto, Azal, Avesso, Loureiro and Trajadura.

Food & Wine Pairing:

A good rule of thumb in food pairing is to look at the cuisine in the region the wine is from, and Portugal is definitely known for their seafood. White fish in particular pairs well with Vinho Verde. It’s also great with seafood dishes that incorporate a rich sauce or fried breadcrumbs.
