2020 Kamp Tal Gruner Veltliner
Tasting Notes:
Deep yellow in color, on the nose there are white flowers, white pepper, and yellow apple. There is a streak of mineral-driven acidity, which tastes of Meyer lemons, thyme, lemongrass and a hint of lime zest. Then it pleasantly rounds out to a bright clean finish.
Crush It Wines:
This is the first wine from our company and we are incredibly proud of it. Made by winemaker and Crush It Co-Founder Julie Cox this organic and natural style of wine was a labor of love and the culmination of years of working in the wine industry.
Gruner Veltliner:
Gruner Veltliner is an Austrian varietal that produces wines of elegance and balance. These wines can range in style from lean and crisp to full and rich and some of the best examples are combinations of both. It has only recently gained popularity in the new world but it has long dominated the Austrian wine industry. Gruner Veltliner represents one-third of all the grapes grown in the country. And of the roughly 50,000 acres of Grüner planted worldwide, over 75% of those are in Austria.
Sta. Rita Hills, AVA:
Sta. Rita Hills, pronounced “Santa” Rita Hills, is one of the smallest AVA’s in California. But don’t let its size fool you. A lot of great wine comes out of this small, yet unique region.
Sta. Rita Hills is closer to the equator than any European wine-growing region and by all logic should be far too hot to grow cool climate varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Sta. Rita Hills is bordered by an East-West mountain range and that mountain range is what’s key. It’s one of only 3 like it in the world. The mountains that border the Sta. Rita Hills pull the fog from the Pacific Ocean on the eastern edge of the AVA’s border straight into the valley. This fog and ocean breeze helps moderate the summer heat, lengthening the growing season and allowing the grapes to ripen slowly without developing mold. This combination of elements create an ideal cool-climate region for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Food & Wine Pairing:
Gruner Veltliners tart acidity can handle the richness and the spices in most Asian cuisine. It’s also a great match with many exotic spices like curry, cardamom, star anise, and turmeric. But it’s that vibrant streak of acidity that makes it such a great match with rich and salty food, hello charcuterie boards.
