2021 Michael Andress "Loss and Lehm" Weisser Burgunder
Tasting Notes:
On the palate, harmony between subtle fruitiness, herbal notes of lemon thyme and mint and a present mineral flavor followed by a gentle finish. Overall, elegant and multi-layered, with a lively acidity structure that gives the wine impressive freshness.
Michael Andress Wines:
Founded in 2003 this 7-hectare vineyard is located in the Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg Appellation in Pfaltz has been kept small and specialized by the winemaker who commits to Biodynamic farming.
In addition to his impressive Riesling holdings in the famed Hergottsacker, Reiterpfad and Maushole vineyards, Michael also farms classic Champagne varieties for his outstanding Sekt (sparkling) wines; in addition to Grauer Burgunder, Auxerrois, and Weissburgunder, which isn’t a surprise given the Pfalz’s geographical proximity to and influence from Alsace. His wines have great tension and minerailty along with freshness and defined fruit flavors.
Weisser Burgunder AKA Pinot Blanc:
Pinot Blanc is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir, aka the white skinned version. (As opposed to Pinot Gris / Grigio which is the grey skinned version). Although not the most famous grape of the Pinot family, it is an important grape in certain regions around the world. In particular, Alsace in France, Alto Adige in northern Italy and Germany. Flavors vary depending on the region but in general Pinot Blanc tends to be made into dry, refreshing and fruity wines with notes of peach, pear, almond, lemon zest and minerals.
Pfalz, Germany:
Pfalz, with roughly 58,000 acres of land planted to grape vines, is the second largest of Germany’s 13 wine regions coming in just behind its neighbor to the north, the Rhienhessen. In fact, the vines here are so densely planted that vines outnumber inhabitants 600 to one.
Pfalz vineyards produce both white (60%) and red (40% wines. The white wines have long been the most successful and as is standard throughout Germany, Riesling dominates and accounts for roughly a quarter of the entire vineyard area. Because of this, the Pfalz has more Riesling planted than any other wine region in the world.
Food & Wine Pairing:
Weissburgunder is known for harmonizing perfectly with many types of food, due to its well-integrated acidity. It pairs well with a variety of proteins from seafood and poultry to lamb and pork. Try it alongside things like Soft cheeses, Crab & avocado salad, White pizza with mushrooms, Quiche Lorraine, Shrimp Pad Thai, Grilled chicken with garlic and tahini sauce, or even pasta with creamy pesto sauce
