2021 Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica 375ml
Tasting Notes:
Intense tropical aromas and loads of white flowers on the nose along with notes of green apple. With flavors of apple blossom and peach skin, zesty citrus notes that come out in the zippy acidity, notes of nectarine, honeycrisp apple, ginger and pops of salinity.
Bisci Wines:
Bisci was founded by brothers Giuseppe and Pierino Bisci when they bought 25 hectares of land in 1972. Of those 25 hectares 18 are planted to Verdicchio. Today Mauro and Tito, sons of Giuseppe have taken the reins of the winery which is located in DOC of Matelica.
Verdicchio:
Verdicchio is a white grape that produces green-hued, refreshingly crisp white wines that are characterized by lively acidity and subtle herbaceous undertones. It is actually thought that this grape might have originated in the Veneto under the name Trebbiano di Soave. Historians think that the Venetians migrated to the Marche during the plague and brought the grape with them and found that it thrived in the coastal town and has been its home for over 600 years.
Le Marche:
Le Marche region is on the eastern coast of central Italy, basically directly across the Adriatic sea from Croatia. This is a region bordered by the Adriatic sea to the east and the Apennine Mountains to the west. If you’re not familiar with this region, Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo border it in the north and south respectively and Umbria is just on the other side of the Apennine Mountains.
Winemaking here spans thousands of years and has been influenced by the Etruscans, Romans and Lombards. It is best known as a white wine region, although it is home to some red wines as well.
Food & Wine Pairing:
Fun appetizers like prosciutto wrapped melon or cheese and potato stuffed puffed pastry are absolutely the way to go. But I also think this wine would be amazing with seafood dishes, it has the crisp acidity to contrast with the food just like squeezing on a lemon, but enough richness and fruit flavors to stand up to a sweeter shellfish based dish.
