2019 Juan Gil Monastrell (Mourvédre)
Monastrell is the Spanish name for the grape that usually goes by its French name Mourvédre. This grape actually most likely originated in Spain and today it grows best in the hot central region of the country. Here it produces wines that are high in tannins, full of black fruit and spices. However, when grown in slightly color climates Monastrell can also have a very nice herbal quality to it.
This wine is made from organically farmed 40 year old vines grown in nutrient poor limestone soils. This means that the vines produce a small amount of fruit but when they do produce is densely flavored, creating a wine that is rich, concentrated and full of spice notes.
