2020 K Wechsler Trocken Riesling

2020 K Wechsler Trocken Riesling

Tasting Notes:

This 2020 Trocken Riesling is one of her entry level wines, but it's not lacking in flavor or complexity. This dry Riesling is elegant, aromatic and bright with tasting notes of petrol, white flowers, crips apple and tart acidity on the finish.

K Wechsler Wines:

Katharina Wechsler has a unique approach to winemaking. She grew up in the Rheinhessen with a grape-growing family who she watched stress out year after year trying to grow grapes for the bulk market. And in Germany in order to get the best price for their wines they had to harvest them at certain, higher sugar levels. Which wasn't always possible depending on the weather that year.

Katharina decided to take over the family business but she wanted to do it differently and she wanted to produce her own wine. She started her first vintage in 2009 while also attending winemaking school at the same time. She now produces some beautiful high quality and complex wines in the Rheinhessen. Her vineyards are also certified organic as of their 2021 harvest and she began to implement biodynamic practices in 2020.

Riesling:

This German grape is considered by many to be one of the most unique white varietals in the world, though it has yet to reach the same popularity in America as it has in Europe. Riesling can range anywhere from a light bone-dry white with an alcohol level somewhere around 8 percent to a beautifully thick sweet dessert wine. It is a wine with a huge richness of flavor and fruit that is complemented by an intense acidity. Riesling is a beautifully balanced wine but it is also extremely temperamental. It needs to be planted in optimum conditions to produce such a flavorful yet delicate wine.

Rheinhessen, Germany:

Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region.  Many of its most significant viticultural areas are favorably influenced by the Rhine river, which runs along its north and eastern borders. The Rhine, along with the Nahe river to the west and the Haardt mountains to its south, form a natural border.

The region has been cultivating grapes for wine production at least since ancient Roman occupation. It is also the home to the oldest surviving records of a German vineyard.

The region predominantly produces white wine (72 percent of Rheinhessen wines are white), inline with the majority of German wine production. It is, however, known for growing relatively diverse range of grape varieties.

Food & Wine Pairing:

Depending on its sweetness level, Riesling can be a helping pairing tool when it comes to fried or spicy foods. They're delicious with foods that have "green" flavors, like the lime, jalapeño and tomatillo in this snapper dish. Their vibrant acidity and minerality can also be terrific with rich dishes flavored with a squeeze of lime, like beef curry. Much like white Burgundy, full-bodied Rieslings are great with earthy flavors and perfect with luscious sauces like the ones in the dishes here.

If a dish is so intense or fiery that beer seems the only option, try an off-dry Riesling instead. The extra sugar in the wine counters the heat, while the chiles in the dish make the wine taste less sweet. Whether light or decadent, dishes that combine sweet and savory flavors work best with sweet Rieslings that still have refreshing acidity.
