2022 Urkatx Getariako Txakolina

2022 Urkatx Getariako Txakolina

Tasting Notes:Ā

100% Hondarrabi Zuri from southeast-facing slopes that provide protection from sea winds and maximum sun exposure. The grapes were hand-harvested.Ā In terms of structure, Txakoli has natural acidity from the high elevation of the hillside vineyards.

Quintessential TxaKoli, it is effervescent. With pops of citrus fruit, minerality, and salinity. Combined with its moderate alcohol (under 11.5% abv) and light body, it is a wine that pairs magically with seafood and fish.

Txakoli Zudugarai Wines:Ā

The owners of Txakoli Zudugarai have generations of experience in growing grapes and producing Txakoli, a young, very dry white wine unique to the Basque Country. Txakoli Zudugaraiā€™s main aim is producing a high-quality wine.Ā

Txakolina:Ā

The vast majority of Txakolina or Txakoli wines are zingy, zesty and slightly fizzy white wines. They are bright and refreshing, made totally dry and tend to have a very mineral, almost salty taste to them. These wines are made primarily from local grapes called Hondarrabi Zuri for the white wines and Hondarrabi Belza for reds and rosƩs.

Txakoli is unique for several reasons. One of which is the manner in which the wine is served. By Basque tradition, the wine is poured into tall, flat-bottomed glasses from 8 to 10 inches in the air from a special pitcher called a Porron. This action agitates the wine, giving the Txakoli a burst of bubbles in the glass. The act is called ā€œEscanciarā€ is a Spanish term that means to pour from the height, mostly associated with pouring Txakoli wine or cider.Ā

Basque Wines:Ā

The Basque country is an autonomous community in Northern Spain. It sits on the extreme western end of Spainā€™s border with France. The region itself is bound by the Bay of Biscay to the north, the autonomous communities of Navarre to the east, La Rioja to the South, and Cantabria to the west. Winemaking is nothing new to the Basque, as with many parts of Spain vineyards in the Basque country have been tended since Roman times.Ā

Wine and perhaps more importantly wine and food is a huge part of the basque culture. So much so that they have the highest wine consumption of any part of Spain. And 80% of the wines that are produced here are consumed here.Ā

Food & Wine Pairing:Ā

If we are thinking about specific food and wine pairing Txakoli is best suited to the Pintxos or small tapas. In the Basque region they areĀ  served at local bars and have colorful bite-sized snacks featuring octopus, clams, shrimp, and other seafood.Ā
