2022 Kinero Rosé of Grenache
Tasting Notes:
This rosé is 100% Grenache. Expect aromas of wild strawberries, honeydew melon, ruby grapefruit and rose petals. It is bright and focused with zippy acidity and minerals on the finish.
Kinero Wines:
Kinero is Anthony Yount’s personal passion project along with his wife Hillary. Anthony is most known for being the winemaker at the famed Denner winery in Paso Robles. Eleven years ago, their family purchased a tiny piece of property high up in the Santa Lucia range in the historic, rugged, and almost forgotten York Mountain AVA.
Rosé Wine:
Rosé is a tricky one because it’s not a varietal in of itself, it’s a style of wine. All rosé, well true rosé, is red wine. But it can be made from many different kinds of red grapes and into a number of different style wines. There are two main ways rosé wines are produced. This wine was made using the maceration method where grapes are picked specifically to make rosé and are pressed off their skins quickly. This is because all the color pigment in wine comes from the skins.
York Mountain AVA, Paso Robles:
The Kinero Vineyard site is 1800 feet above the Pacific Ocean between the towns of Cambria and Templeton, the vineyard boasts an incredibly diverse set of soil profiles, including rocky limestone, clay, and sand. They showcase the uniqueness of their vineyard by being as gentle and transparent as they can in the winery – co-fermenting when possible, lots of whole bunch fermentations, native yeast, and a mix of concrete and large format neutral oak aging.
The extreme weather, diverse soils, and steep topography create unforgiving farming conditions and minuscule yields –(remember wines like to struggle). However, the reward is incredibly intense and character-driven fruit.
Food & Wine Pairing:
Rosé is kind of like Pinot Noir in that it goes with A LOT. It’s great with seafood, chicken, white meats, grains, pasta, and summer vegetables. The tart acidity can be a nice balance for richer dishes. Rosé is also excellent with a wide range of cheeses.
