2022 Contini Cannonau di Sardegna
Tasting Notes:
The Cannonau di Sardegna DOC "Sartiglia" from the Contini winery is a prime example of Sardinian wine making, a red wine that has the richness and intensity of the Cannonau grape, one of the most representative of the island.
Rich and complex aromatic. On the nose, there are notes of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and plums, followed by spicy hints of black pepper and a slight vein of Mediterranean herbs that evoke the rugged and sunny terrain from which it originates. Structured and balanced by acidity and well-integrated tannins that promise good longevity. The aging in barrels adds complexity, with hints of vanilla and chocolate that blend perfectly with the ripe fruit.
Contini Wines:
Contini is proud to be the first and oldest winery in Sardinia. Today the company is led by Alessandro and Mauro, the sons of Totino and Antonio respectively. Paolo Contini, the son of Attilio and grandson of Salvatore, is today the manager of the family's history and Honorary President of the Contini Winery.
Cannonau aka Grenache:
Cannonau is the Sardinian name for the Grenache grape. Cannonau is a late-ripening grape variety, which is best suited to hot and dry conditions, and is characterised by a medium alcohol level, soft acidity and generous red fruit flavours (raspberry and strawberry) alongside subtle floral and white pepper spice notes. It may be produced as a single varietal wine or blended with other varieties to add body and fruit without tannins.
Sardinia, Italy:
Sardinia, is 150 miles off the west coast of mainland Italy, is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The portfolio of varieties planted in Sardinian vineyards bears little resemblance to those in any other Italian wine region. Instead there are varieties of French and Spanish origin, a major one being Grenache (called Cannonau here), Carignan (and its distinct clonal variants Bovale di Spagna and Bovale Grande) and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Food & Wine Pairing:
Ideal as an accompaniment to intense Sardinian dishes, such as roasted suckling pig or Gallurese soup, Contini's "Sartiglia" also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and red meat dishes. Its versatility also makes it suitable for pairing with international dishes rich in flavors and spices.
