2021 Love You Bunches Carbonic Sangiovese
Tasting Notes:Â
This is always such a fun and refreshing wine. This vintage you’ll find notes of ripe berries, watermelon, and crunchy minerality. It’s essentially adult Sour Patch Kids. Serve chilled.Â
So Fresh and Stolpman Wines:Â
So Fresh is the natural wines centered second label from Stolpman Wines. Stolpman was established over 20 years ago by Tom Stolpman as an estate vineyard in the now Ballard Canyon AVA. Their So Fresh label comes out after many years of innovation in their original winery and Love You Bunches was their first release. They produce all natural, no sulfur added wines.
Sangiovese:Â
Sangiovese is one of Italy’s most important grapes. In Tuscany, it is the base for some of Italy’s most famous wines. These include Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and Brunello di Montalcino. Most Sangiovese wines tend to be medium-bodied with notes of bright red fruit like cherry and raspberry. They also have notes of earth, truffle, and spice and older wines can take on nuances of coffee and leather. All of which complement the core of acidity that is synonymous with the varietal.
Carbonic Wines:Â
Carbonic wines refer to carbonic maceration, which is essentially a different type of fermentation. A typical fermentation process transforms the grape juice into alcohol via a yeast fermentation. The yeast, whether naturally present on the grapes or added by the winemaker, “eat” the natural sugars in the grape and converts them into alcohol. In carbonic maceration, however, the initial fermentation is not caused by yeast, but instead occurs intracellularly. Which is a fancy way of saying that it happens inside of each individual grape. Whole bunches of grapes are placed inside of a vessel that is sealed and filled with carbon dioxide. In this oxygen free environment each berry begins to ferment from the inside. You can expect flavors of Bubble gum, kirsch, Banana, and ripe strawberry often. Sometimes there will even be cotton candy-like flavors as well.
Food & Wine Pairing:Â
Sangiovese has always been an incredibly food friendly wine. Throw in carbonic and you have a bright, fruity, chillable red that goes great with everything from barbecue to ramen to Mexican or Thai food. Carbonic wines tend to be very food friendly so don’t be afraid to experiment!
