2022 Bodega Arautava Listan Blanco
Tasting Notes:
This wine was direct pressed and fermented with indigenous yeast in tank and then aged for 3-4 months in tanks before bottles. It’s aromatically fresh, with citrus notes and touches of herbs like fennel and rosemary. It’s bright fresh and clean on the palate and very easy drinking.
Bodega Arautava:
The Garcia family of the Orotava valley count 3 generations of commercial wine production on the northern flank of Teide. Founded in 1998 and now run by the 3rd generation in Carlos Garcia.
Since taking over in 2020 Carlos has made rapid strides. All wines are fermented with indigenous yeast, 500 liter barrels and concrete tanks have been incorporated into a formerly all tank regime and though not seeking certification due to the islands tricky subtropical climate, he has farmed organically since the 2021 vintage. His goal is to produce wine with purity of fruit that express, in classical fashion, the islands unique combination of Atlantic and volcanic character.
Listan Blanco:
The most widely planted grape variety in the Canary Islands, Listan Blanco is originally from Jerez de la Frontera, where it’s known as Palomino Fino. It thrives in the Canary Islands, where it’s able to adapt to different altitudes and micro-climates whilst still producing consistent yields, partly due to its natural resistance to disease.
Tenerife, Canary Islands:
The Canary Islands are located around 60 miles west of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. The main Islands in the archipelago, from largest to smallest, are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. There are 20 recognized unique grape varieties there and more than 20 new varieties that are currently being studied. Listan Blanco and Listan Negro are the most widely planted grapes on the island. Others include white wine grapes Malvasia Volcanica, Malvasia Aromatica and Albillo Criollo along with red wine grapes Negramoll, Vijariego Negro and Baboso Negro.
There are also a few plantings of international varieties like Syrah. Dry, high acid whites and light, fruity reds, some made using carbonic maceration are typical, but richer, oak-aged expressions are produced too. As of 2020, around 15 million gallons of wine (51% red and 49% white) were produced in the archipelago.
Food & Wine Pairing:
Because this wine is so bright and refreshing it is the perfect pairing for seafood and shellfish dishes, or fresh seasonal vegetables. A grilled octopus salad would be excellent with this wine or even something fun like a grilled peach pizza.
