2020 Domaine Paul Blanck Pinot Gris "Classique"

2020 Domaine Paul Blanck Pinot Gris "Classique"

Tasting Notes:

This wine was produced from certified organic vineyards with 35 year old vines and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel vats and aged in large, neutral oak barrels.

Tasting notes of citrus, particularly lime, mineral, lemon verbena, green apple, fresh pear, apple skin with notes of flint, mango and ginger on the finish.

Domaine Paul Blanck:

The Paul Blanck estate traces its history back to the 17th century. Located in the village of Kientzheim, Domaine Paul Blanck produces wines that are balanced, terroir-expressive and versatile.

Pinot Gris:

Pinot Gris is a white-wine grape originally from the vineyards of Burgundy. It is now found in wine regions all over the world. Pinot Gris grapes take on their distinctive array of colors; anything from orange-pink to pale, dusty purple, they can even take on a brassy copper-like quality. The adjective Gris is French for "gray", and refers to the dusty, light-gray hue the grapes often take on.

Pinot Gris is usually produced as a single variety wine as grapes are naturally moderate to low in acidity and high in sugars. Flavors and aromas vary greatly from region to region and from style to style. But common features include notes of ripe pear, apple, stone fruit, tropical fruit and citrus. Sweeter versions can even a hints of baking spices and honey.

Alsace, France:

Alsace is located in the far north-eastern corner of France. The region lies between the Vosges mountains and the French border with Germany, marked by the Rhine river. A long, thin region, it measures 115 miles north to south and just 25 miles from east to west. The Vosges play a vital role in defining the region's terroir, they protect Alsace from maritime weather patterns, effectively blocking the rain and humidity, which helps make the region one of the sunniest and driest in France - second only to Roussillon in the south.

90% of the wines grown in Alsace are white with the dominant grapes being Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. And while significantly outnumbered by white wines, red wines are also grown here, almost all of them Pinot Noir.

Food & Wine Pairing:

Food pairings can vary widely based on which style of Pinot Gris / Grigio but a classic pairing is sushi and other light seafood dishes. Fish and chips is perfect with a richer still Alsatian Pinot Gris. Not only is it great with fresh crisp salads, Pinot Gris is one of the main wines that pairs well with goat cheese. But one of my favorite pairings that I've found was with fried pork dumplings, such a killer combination!
