2018 Mastro Greco Campania
Tasting Notes:Â
This wine has an intense bouquet of tropical fruit and white flowers. It is fresh and fruity on the palate and ends with a crisp, bright, acid driven finish.
Mastroberardino Wines:Â
The Mastroberardino Family have been making wines since 1878 and they are recognized as leaders in Italian viticulture. Particularly because they are largely responsible for the revival, and elevation, of the Campania wine region following WWII.Â
Greco:Â
Greco is an Italian white wine grape grown mainly in the Campania area of Southern Italy. This grape generally produces a light and refreshing style of wine which can range from bright crisp citrus note, to pleasant savory herbal and floral notes to wines with note of fresh stone fruit like nectarines and peaches.
Campania, Italy:Â
The Campania wine region is located in southern Italy, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea where it forms the “shin” of Italy’s boot. The area is known for its diverse range of grapes and unique terroir, which results in a wide range of styles of wines being produced.
The name comes from the latin phrase campania felix, which roughly translates to “happy land.” The region has strong historical links to the wine industry dating back to the 12th century BC and is one of Italy’s oldest wine regions.
Its most important variety is arguably Aglianico, the grape behind the region’s two most famous and respected red wines: Taurasi and Aglianico del Taburno. Aglianico was introduced to the area by the Greeks and later cultivated by the Romans.
Also vital to Campania’s vineyards are the white-wine varieties Fiano and Greco, which are championed by the region’s most respected white wines, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo.
Food & Wine Pairing:Â
This wine makes an excellent pairing for light appetizers so you can pop it open and pretend you’re enjoying an aperitivo in the sunny Italian countryside. Pairs well with everything from charcuterie, green olives, and ricotta to mussels, capers, and chicken salad.
